Extremely heavy rain owing to a tropical depression and Tropical Storm Wutip pummeled Southern Taiwan. In Kaohsiung, school and work were suspended in some areas amid the storm. Out at sea, a ferry traveling between Pingtung and Xiaoliuqiu rocked violently on choppy waters. Due to the weather, ferry trips after 9 a.m. were canceled.
This video taken by a local on their way to work shows the road already flooded in muddy water. Splashes form as the car moves past.
In another video taken from a high-rise apartment, a drainage ditch is already flooded to the top and almost overflowing onto the road. Meanwhile, two catfishes wriggle next to a drain cover. The heavy rain in Kaohsiung is leaving roads completely flooded over.
It’s raining even more heavily in the mountains. School and work were suspended in several neighborhoods of Taoyuan District and students were sent home. Shortly after, Maolin and Namasia Districts also cancelled classes.
Meanwhile, over at Pingtung, a ferry sails on the choppy waters. The ship oscillates wildly with the waves.
Ferry captain
The wind and waves are stronger today. It reads 3m on the buoy.
Passenger
Really bumpy. I didn’t puke. But it was really, really bumpy.

Our ship went out this morning at 7:20 . After some 20 minutes, for around three to four nautical miles, the waves reached heights of three, four meters, so we decided to turn back and suspend all journeys.
Ferries between Pingtung and Xiaoliuqiu were originally going to be cancelled after 11 a.m., but the weather pushed it earlier to 9 a.m., affecting more passengers.
